Hi! Sorry it's been a while. I'm an evening blogger, but my evenings haven't been very free, so I tend to want to go straight to bed after work.

What can I tell you about? Well, today I went to the wonderful Body Shop, and this nice lady called Kate helped me out, she really knows her stuff about skin. I think it's great when people can be so clued up on something, anyway she recommended Aloe Vera for me, as I've started breaking out, I'm soon to be 18 and it's only just started, i thought i was so lucky. I love that it's something natural recommended to me, that way you can be sure it's gonna be good for you as it isn't created in a laboratory with loads of icky chemicals. The other skin care ranges they do are jojoba, seaweed and tea tree oil, though I'm forgetting some, and they're all for certain skin types. www.thebodyshop.co.uk/page/skincareconsultation
She also told me I was lacking in Vitamin A, and that carrots are a great source of these. Yay a perfect excuse to start growing more carrots.

Growing.... ahh the good life, I can't wait till next year when i will be living with my beau. I did some more dreaming today about how our garden will be, we're gonna have at least 10 chickens, so our next project will be to build a run to house them, about 7 metres squared.
I also learnt about crop rotation today, so we're gonna have at least 6 raised beds.

There are 5 specific groups of vegetables, and the idea is that a group should not return to a patch of soil for at least 3 to 4 years. This is because certain crops require certain nutrients from the soil and if the same crop is planted back in the same location the next year, most of the nutrients will already of been used up. When the crops are rotated, the soil has a chance to replenish itself. The 5 groups and the general order they are rotated in are
  • Onions, which include your leeks, shallots, and garlic
  • Potatoes & Tomatoes
  • Umbellifers which are root vegetables, covering carrots, parsnips and celery
  • Brassicas which are your cabbages, cauliflower, broccoli, radish and swede,
  • Legumes, which are peas & beans
It is then recommended you rest a bit of this land after by growing what is known as green manure on it. Rather than leave the soil bare, and for all the nutrients to be drained and swept away by weather, plants that improve or protect the soil are grown, so that when vegetables are grown again the next year, the soil will be replenished.

That all sounds wicked no? I can't wait to start, and then i found out about companion planting, which intrigued me even more. It's the idea that planting certain vegetables together can benefit them. The most common example is that of the Native American's "Three Sisters". This is a bed made up of sweetcorn, beans and squash plants. The sweetcorn offers a stem for the beans to climb. The beans set nitrogen into the soil which benefits the sweetcorn and squash and the large leaves of the squash act as a living mulch keeping moisture in the soil, preventing weeds from taking over, and keeping the sun from the roots of the sweetcorn.
It's definitely something I'll look into.

I have pretty much exhausted myself with all this information in one blog, so all I can really do now is show you how big the chickens got!
.
Benjalina is on my boyfies head, and Peggy has a brilliant pose on his shoulder! I love them to pieces!

I can't tell you how much I love my boyfie! It's killing me at the moment only being able to see him on the weekends. I'm like a missile waiting to be fired now, and my life is just one big countdown till next year when I can soar on over and explode on his doorstep, exposing him to the radiation that is my life for the rest of our lives.

It's gonna be so brilliant, we'll have more chooks because i think I've found him a new favourite pet now, I'm so happy the snakes will be going, I've got nothing against the animal, just I think they're extremely boring in captivity and don't see the point of keeping them. I am quite fond of the bearded dragons he has at the office, oh and the Bosc Monitor, it's strangely lovely. His bunnies will always be his favourite though, there's nothing I can do about that, they're too cute!

What else? Well we're gonna grow vegetables in our garden, all the ones we like, potatoes, carrots, parsnips etc.. there will be some green ones, I just have to adapt my taste buds first. Can anyone tell me is it possible to grow peppers over here outside? Or where would I need to grow them.
We already got a pear and a cherry tree, I'd like an apple tree as they're my favourite, that'd be rewarding!

Aswell as growing veg and the occasional fruit we'll have herbs in the house aswell. Oregano! I love the stuff, yum yum and parsley and mint too. I'd also like to start researching the medicinal benefits of some herbs too, so anyone point in me in a good direction?

Oh and at the bottom of the garden there will be a worm farm, i think that'll be fun. Vermiculture is the word for that, so you will learning something today from my blog. I think it'll be more exciting than my two hermit crabs are being at the moment, as at least we'll get something out of it.

Anyway those plans are just the icing of the cake, there will be much more... like Bee's! I forgot to mention bee's I want to learn bee keeping, it's always fascinated me, I'm not much of a fan of hunny, but lots of people are, so I can be nice and share it with them.

I have to silence myself now otherwise I could go on all night about how I'll make slug salads for our chicken babies and grow catnip for the friendly neighborhood strays.

 Happy dreaming and keep smiling!

Greetings World! My name is SamBee, i thought I'd start this journal by talking bout zombies. Right now I seem to be convinced the apocalypse will come. It's almost as if I'm wishing it. I found this lovely picture that tells exactly how I'm feeling.

I have a boyfriend called Chris and unfortunately for him, he's pulled into this. We got chickens the other day. Two little chickies.
For anyone interested in chickens at the moment I believe them to be a Silver Duck-Wing Welsummer, which I'm really hoping is true as they are quite rare and it makes me very lucky and a Campine. But to everyone else they can just be Peggy Meggy and Baby Benjalina.

I got chickens, so we could have eggs. They won't start laying until next year but I can wait. At least that is if they're both chicks. I'm concerned Peggy might be a cockerel.

We're gonna have a vegetable garden one day aswell, i like getting my hands dirty. I go to an agricultural college and study animal management, so I'm keen on working with critters and breaking a sweat. There's nothing like a good days honest work to help you sleep at night.

Well that's all for now. Just a short introduction, hopefully I'll write back soon, and slowly ease myself into the process of writing again.
Have a nice week!
